Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise announcement on Twitter which made people scratching their head over that cryptic tweet.
On Tuesday, PM Modi created quite a flutter on social media by announcing going off social media from Sunday. Soon after his tweet was posted, Twitter exploded with several responses from the public responding at this unexpected tweet from PM Modi that has left everyone speculating.
“This Sunday, thinking of giving up my social media accounts” PM Modi tweeted. As per to his tweet, he is planning to give up on his Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube accounts. “Will keep you all posted,” PM Modi added.
However, it is all about celebrating and honoring women on the occasion of Women’s Day. A few hours later, Modi confirmed by officially announcing a #SheInspiresUs campaign, asking users to praise inspiring women, who would get the chance to handle his social media handles such as Twitter, Facebook as well as Instagram for a day.
PM Modi said, “This Women’s Day, I will give away my social media accounts to women” further he appreciated women and said, “their life and work inspire us.”
Whatever India Prime Minister Narendra Modi says or does turn into a trend on its own. Within half an hour of time span, the tweet was liked more than 25,000 times.
Now, it seems to be like social media handles are going to have to take a pause, as Modi looks to take a break from social media, at least for the time being.
PM Modi is certainly considered to be one of the most popular world leaders in international level when one looks at social media following alone. In Twitter alone, he has 53 Million followers and more than 35 million followers on Instagram as well as all over 4.5 Million subscribers on YouTube. In other words, you can say that he is one of the biggest brands on social media is an irony.
Soon, Opposition leader also expressed their reactions that started pouring in. One of the first to comment from opposition parties was Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who said, “Give up hatred, not social media accounts.”
Tripura Chief Minister as well as BJP leader Biplab Deb then also responded to the former Congress chief’s tweet and said, “So that’s the reason Sonia Gandhi doesn’t have any Social Media account?”
Shashi Tharoor who is Congress MP also responded to the Prime Minister. He said the unexpected statement may have led many to guess whether this is the first step headed for banning social media in the country.
The Twitter handle of the Prime Minister’s Office comprises 32 million followers. In September 2019, a report claims that PM Modi was the third most followed world leader on the microblogging site, just behind US President Donald Trump and his forerunner Barack Obama.
The Prime Minister, on the other hand, was also the first Indian to cross the 50-million follower’s mark on Twitter. He also posted the announcement on his other social media accounts such as Facebook and Instagram accounts as well.
