- The remaining two matches of the ODI series between India and South Africa have been suspended and will be rescheduled.
On Friday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made two big announcements; one was the postponement of the IPL to April 15 while the other one was to suspend the remaining two matches of the ODI series that was planned to be held between India and South Africa.
As soon as the decision was out, Indian cricket legend, Sunil Gavaskar, reacted to the development and termed it ‘most sensible decision taken by BCCI’.
Earlier, the IPL was scheduled to begin on March 29 and was about to carry on till May 24th, but after the scheduled meeting of the IPL Governing Council (GC) in Mumbai, BCCI decision finally came out.
On Saturday, previous to the GC meeting, the BCCI office-bearers, as well as the GC members, are also likely to meet the team owners along with other stakeholders.
Before the decision came out, there were many rumors and doubts regarding the league for a while, but now all those speculations came to an end with BCCI’s final decision.
Jay Shah, who is secretary, BCCI, said in the statement that the BCCI is going to work closely with the Government of India together with the “Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and all other relevant central and state government departments in this regard,”
Even on Thursday, the sports ministry had also sent a directive to all the sports federations and asked them to hold all the events closed doors if in case they are unavoidable.
In an interview with India Today, Sunil Gavaskar said, “An absolutely fair call and congratulations to the BCCI for taking the step” as the heath of the public as well as the health of the country is most important.
He added, “Because the coronavirus has been spreading rapidly and so it was very very necessary to take the call.” At present there are thousands of people who turn up for a match, along with that there are so many people in the lobbies of the hotel as well as airports. There are so many people who are traveling on an aircraft. “So yes, anybody might get infected and he could spread it on, so I think this is the most sensible decision taken by the BCCI.”
In the meantime, other than Sunil Gavaskar, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player Harbhajan Singh also appreciated the decision of BCCI to consider the health and wellness of people ahead of the game.
