At this time of crises due to coronavirus, the ‘COVID warriors’ are putting their life at risk in order to protect us from this deadly virus, without even thinking of their life. But, even at this time of emergency, some people are making this worse and disrespecting the COVID-19 warriors.
One such appalling recent incident was reported in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, where health workers were pelted with stones by locals residents of the locality when the health officials arrived at the locality in order to screen the residents for coronavirus.
As per the Police, the health officials were trying to trace a person who had come into contact with a coronavirus patient in the past. The incident took place in the city’s Tatpatti Bakhal neighborhood on Wednesday, where two women doctors were injured.
One video of this whole incident got viral on social media, where you can see two of the workers covered in blue protective suits running away as local mob pelts at them with stones. Earlier it started as a small crowd, but soon it turns into a 100-strong mob that was armed with stones and sticks. The mob was also seen abusing the health officials and chasing them to get them out of their locality. The doctors were apparently rescued by the police officials after they managed to escape on a vehicle.
Even after facing such abuse from the people of the locality, a team of health workers, which includes Dr. Zakiya Sayed, was back on its job for screening people for the COVID-19 disease in the Indore city of Madhya Pradesh after being attacked by local residents.
Dr. Zakiya Sayed said to news agency ANI that they had been working on the screening of all the contacts of COVID-19 patients for the last four days. “But what we saw yesterday, we had not seen it earlier.” She added that they got injured because of the incident from the local residents “but we have to do our job and will not be scared,”
Dr. Zakiya Sayed was a part of the healthcare workers team who was the victim of the incident where doctors were pelted with stones on Wednesday by the local residents. She was also one of the woman doctors who apparently sustained some injuries in the incident.
On Thursday, a total seven people were arrested for the attack on the team as many such cases were reported from several parts of the nation. The Center, on the other hand, has asked the state police to make sure that the health workers get maximum security from such kinds of attacks.
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also assured the safety of the healthcare workers is the responsibility of his government. He also added that all those who are involved in pelting stones at healthcare officials in Indore are going to be given strict punishment. The accused are going to be booked under the National Security Act (NSA).
On Thursday, a total number of fourteen fresh coronavirus cases was reported in Indore which now takes the total number to 89 in the city.
