Organizers of the ICC T20 World Cup amid on-going COVID-19 pandemic crises are still hopeful of conducting a successful tournament even if it contending straight with Australia’s football codes.
The men’s T20 World Cup tournament is scheduled to be played in October-November, starting from 18th October 2020 and will carry on till 15th November 2020. But now the on-going crises in the world due to coronavirus have made this tournament to come under doubts which have brought the complete sporting calendar to a crashing standstill.
As the other two sporting tournament seasons such as Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (AFL) have been suspended due to some reason, they may now clash with the T20 World Cup when they start again.
The Covid-19 pandemic has not only affected certain sports events but has stopped almost every top-level sport across the globe, out of which Australia’s NRL rugby league season was also suspended on Monday. In addition to that, the Olympic association of the country have also pulled out their athletes from participating in the summer’s Games in Tokyo after Canada did the same for their athlete as well.
Additionally, the situation in Australia has also been gone to worse considerably in the past 24 hours, with the cases of coronavirus to be reported more than 1,700 and the state of Queensland which immediately let the shut down of its border to the rest of the nation.
Nick Hockley, who is the chief executive of the T20 World Cup organizing committee, was also quoted as stating by cricket.com.au. “We’re wanting to give ourselves the best promising opportunity of going ahead as per to the plan, so there’s no impending or speedy decision,”
Like everywhere in the world, nothing is assured that when everything is going to return in normality. In spite of a strong statement last week from Kevin Roberts, who is the Chief Executive of Australia’s Cricket, stated that the T20 World Cup tournament which is planned to be held for October and November will remains up in the air.
Roberts also said that they are hoping all forms of sport to be started playing once again in “just a few weeks’ or in a few months’ time.”
There were many reports and rumors that suggested that the T20 World Cup may possibly be cancelled. The BCCI on the other hand, is now looking at the October-November time frame for hosting the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which stands postponed till April 15 and the chances of it is being conducted in the coming future, seems to be very unlikely. But the move can only be likely if the ICC chooses to reschedule the World T20 to be held later in the year. On the other hand, ICC has also made it clear though that the T20 World Cup is still going to be carried on as planned as well as there have been no talks of any delay in the tournament.
